Claire Short's change of mind not to resign meant not only that she is a minister without strong principles but also can not keep her word. After promises to resign she felt that her career would be thus at an end and reversed on her decision.
Though undoubtly Tony Blair will award her heavily for loyalty but I wonder if she can EVEN get re-elected by her constituents in the next general election as a MP??? Will you vote for someone who betrayed the anti-war movement and went back on her words? Obviously this depends on your attitude to war, but nevertheless 50% of Britons are against the matter and more so within the labour voters. Therefore I find Claire Short's position in the party slightly improved but her position within her people (which she serves) humiliated and damaged beyond all repair.
