Well, Uncle Walt (Whitman) was a war photographer during the Civil War - actually one of the first war photographers IIRC. But, is it not he who had conflicted feelings on war and called Abe Lincoln "Oh Captain My Captain" ??
But, yes, much art IS political. Always has been.
