The abduction happened during the 1970-ies. The victims were predominately academics who was kidnappened in order to teach North Korean spies about Japanese language and customs so they could easier infiltrate a persieved enemy.
The surviving victims were allowed to go to Japan last year - but all returned to NK - mainly because NK refused to let their new NK'an families leave with them
