Spanking cats or dogs is quite useless, as they cannot understand the connection between the punishment and what they have done wrong. Only humans with our superior reasoning capacity and memory can make a connection between punishment and crime. If you want to keep a pet you’ll just have to put up with those sorts of things.
And I’m afraid that labour unions are one of the things standing up for the rights of the common worker. Labour unions that wield too much power can lead to corruption, but a union that is strong and independent enough can work for better conditions for its workers. Remember one of the first things Hitler and Stalin (lenin?) did was to ban trade unions.
