Kidnapping in the territories of other countries has happened quite often during the last few decades. Just think of the Eichmann capture done by the Israeli secret services in South America. I do not agree with conducting the operation without the other country's approval, especially as in this case the US could have easily cooperated with the Italians, Germans or Swedes. And if torture was involved, well that would just be another torture scandal for US military/secret services.
