I have synaesthesia, albeit a mild case.
It is the experience of duel sensory experience, but is still reliant on the receiving senses receptors working.
If you experience colors with sound, you still only "see" the color upon hearing the sound. My statement, "you have to hear sound" still stands. The associated colors are a dual sensation, not replacing sensation.
