My pastor will be the first to tell you that marriage is a secular institution. That the church endorses it, in its classical sense, is a coincidence.
Now, that said, the issue of altering the definition of "marriage" to include that of same-sex couples must therefore be a secular issue, since marriage is a function of the state, not the church.
Whether individual churches or synods decide to recognize the marriages is their own affair...
