You probably came too late. If not, did you do any of the following:

-Refused to give the attack merchant any money
-Execute the stealing guard
-Told the Cleric to bugger off
-Refused to pay the moneylenders
-Refused to pay for repairing the ruined farms

All these makes the people like you much less, which also can lead to 'exile'.
