I think, MagiK, that you hold the importance of "the American general populace" in overly high regard. The will of the people always has been and always will be an illusion; it serves only to replace the equally imaginary divine right of kings as government's supposed legitimacy.
Oh, and I can't speak for the Army, of course, Morgeruat, but the Navy has opened every community to females save the SEALs and submarines -- the latter being due to prosaic habitation concerns (the men still hot bunk because of space constraints).
