Ahh, lets see.
Killing the Shade Lord is probably the easiest part of the quest.
Ordinary shadows and shadow fiends can drain strength from you. They don't drain that much so they are only really dangerous if you have low strength or are being mobbed by them. Unless they come in hordes they are not that much a threat. As you are probably expecting you will met lots of these critters.
Shade Wolves, a local specialty these wolves are immune to normal weapons but have little else, combat wise, to distinguish themselves from ordinary wolves.
Skeleton Warriors. These nasties seem to be a staple at any crypt setting in BG2. They are only vulnerable to magical weapons and tend to shrug off spells cast at them. They pack a mean punch too usually wielding magical two-handed swords.
Bone golems are much like skeleton warriors, only much worse! They take it a step further by being totally immune to spells and the fact that they are not technically undead (they are magical automatons made of bones, not animated corpses) renders anti-undead measures powerless. They are a bit of a sight to behold though. Few monsters looks as grotesque as them.
A lot of people say there's a lich about in the temple ruins. I haven't encountered him, but maybe that has something to do with my skill settings.
You might want to leave a space open in your party as you will be able to rescue a hero who might join your party.
My picninc-list for the Umar Hills quest:
Magical weapons, they need not be very powerful, just magical. A haste spell/scroll/potion/item. Strength spells/scrolls/potions/items (only necessary if you have physically weak party members). Magical arrows if you want to make the new NPC tag along.
The extended picnic list, if you want to kill all and everything:
The above plus: Anti spell protections (Spell Thrust, Pierce Magic, etc.). Lower Resistance spells/scrolls. Lots of summons (spells/items/whatever). Abilities to resist level drain (babarian/berzerker rage, Amulet of Power, Negative Energy Protection).

Just when you find the entrance to the old temple a fight will ensue that might prove very difficult for a newbie. The stained glass window is the key. One way to cut it is to send your strongest character alone and hasted to do it. Be sure to keep moving all the time and never allow yourself to be surrounded.

You will also meet a very large creature of reptilian nature. You don't need to fight him, but the reward for doing so is very big. If you chose to ignore him at first you can always go back later when you have gained some more levels and finish him off.
