Recently the escalation of the death toll of American soldiers in Iraq has been a major feature in the world's news. Coupled with this the call for reinforcements has also put more at risk to Americans and George W Bush's election chances. However I never realised that the fact that guns are available in America caused more death to civilians in their own country than to American soldiers in war. Quote from my modern studies textbook;
"More Americans were killed by non-military violence between 1979 and 1997 (651,697) than died in all of America's wars since 1775 (650,858)."
Can this be right? If this trend is the same today then gun crime is a bigger killer than war fo Americans. So what I'm trying to say is is that why are so many people getting onto Bush about the war when the domestic policy of being able to own a firearm is causing more harm and heartbreak fo families. Perhaps if the US looked to its own backyard before other matters there might be much less avoidable death.
