At least three suspects of the Madrid train bombings, possibly including the ringleader, have blown themselves up rather than face arrest, killing a policeman as well. There may have been a fourth or fifth suspect killed in last night's blast in a flat in suburban Madrid but investigators are awaiting DNA confirmation.

One of the police officers who took part in the raid said the men shouted 'God is Great' or something similar in Arabic before detonating the bomb in Leganes.

The Spanish Interior Minister, Angel Acebes, said police believe that the three men who set off the blast were behind the March 11 bombing and killed themselves rather than be arrested.

The minister did not rule out that one suspect could have escaped before the area was cordoned off.

The powerful blast sent a column of smoke into the air and left a gaping hole in the front of the block, damaging nearby buildings. Police cordoned off the area and residents were evacuated from their homes, with 30 families spending the night in hotels.

The Spanish news agency Europa Press reported that the police have linked the men with Friday's bomb scare, when 12 kilogram's of dynamite was found wedged beneath a high-speed train line.

However a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said police have yet to establish a link between Friday's incident and the March 11 blasts beyond the fact the same type of explosive was used.
