If you refuse Edwin's order to kill the Cowled Wizard, the guildhall goes hostile against you, and after you kill them all, Renal will not be happy and you receive no reward.
However, CW made them hostile on the same floor as Renal, so I am guessing Arkanis Gath tripped and fell down the stairs.
