Bush death threat man on trial
A 32-year-old Slovenian has gone on trial for threatening to kill George W Bush during a visit there in 2001.
Tomi Sluga claimed an email he sent the White House in May 2001, two weeks before the Bush visit, was "only meant as a joke".
He is charged with attempting to endanger the life of a person under international protection - a crime listed in Slovenia's Penal Code in the same chapter as genocide and war crimes.
If found guilty, Sluga faces up to 10 years in prison.
"President, save the planet ... We will kill you in Ljubljana!!! Welcome!" Sluga wrote in the email sent to Bush's official White House address.
A few days later, police searched Sluga's house in the village of Crnci in northern Slovenia, confiscated his computer and began investigating.
Legal procedures and their preparations can take months or even years in Slovenia, and the delay before Sluga's trial is not unusual.

The fact that he sent it two weeks before Georgie came to Slovenia makes it a bit worse I think. I doubt that he really meant it though. If it were up to me, if no further evidence was found that he really was planning to do that, he should pay a fine, and maybe spent a couple of days in jail. But not 2-10 years. PS: I bet Bush gets death-threats all the time. So I think this is Slovene law at work, probably with a bit of pressure from Americans, especially since people were completely paranoid then and were checking (without a reason or a permit btw) emails of some people... This was an important meeting (Bush - Putin Summit), so no wonder this freaked them out. It's still silly, though.
