Yeah i actually came across this problem myself once, and not knowing what to do(i hadn't discovered this forum yet) i e-mailed interplay who actually told me the right thing to do it was:

Q: I am getting an "Assertion Failed..." error

A: Depending on the line number that is displayed, this error may mean something different.

Line 302
This will occur if you attempt to install the patch for the full verison of Baldur's Gate on top of the Tales of The Sword Coast or the Chapter I & II version. Both of these later titles already have the patch encorporated. You will need to uninstall Baldur's and reinstall the games without installing that patch. If you have Tales of The Sword Cast installed please reference the TOSC patches page.

Line 1072
This will occur if Tales of The Sword Coast has been previously installed, the save games have been converted, but upon reinstallation of Baldurs TOSC was not reinstalled. You will need to install TOSC to utilize the save games that have already been converted.

Line 1780
This seems to occur most commonly when Tales of The Sword Coast is installed on top of the Chapter I&II version of the game. You can only install Tales of the Sword Coast onto the full version of Baldur's Gate.

All other line numbers
The majority of all other Assertion errors seem to be caused when the game is unable to locate a file that is needed or the file is corrupted. To correct this you will want to try the following:

Clean your cdrom drive with a lense cleaner and be sure that all dust, dirt, or glue has been cleaned from the cd's surface.
Be sure to delete the games cache (delete all files within {games folder}\CACHE\DATA\). When you restart, the program will recreate the cache and should repair the missing file. (If you have done a custom install you will want to find out the area # that is causing the trouble by checking the map. Once you have narrowed down the trouble area, delete that file from your DATA folder and attempt to recopy it from the cd back to the same DATA folder.)
If the previous two steps do not work you will want to try to use an earlier save game as well. There have ben a few reports of a corrupted save game causing this type of error.

I hope this can help but it might only apply if you have totsc installed as well
