I will say, however, that even though it is a legally impermissible assumption to think "because he commited crime before, he probably did it again," it is a perfectly normal layman's conclusion. And, as a layman, I gotta say the dude got convicted for theft, so it ain't likely he's a choir boy.

Would it help to point out that he was only 16 years old at the time of the theft and has never been convicted of anything else?
