I don't think that there is irony in there.
He believes that abortion is murder - and that therefore those who carry out abortions are effectively 'serial killers'. Thus in his mind, by killing this doctor he save hundreds, possibly thousands of lives. And for him, there really was no other way 'peaceful/non-lethal' way of stopping this 'murderer' - terminal force was the only option.
It's the old, "If you could have killed Hitler in 1920 you could have saved millions of lives" argument...
He believed that those foetuses were live human beings - the same as a new born baby: you will never convince him of it otherwise. To the rest of us, the reverse is true - and therefore we condemn him.
But put yourself in his shoes for a hypothetical instant. Supposing that you knew of someone who was killing new-born babies on mass and the law was powerless or unable to prevent the killing. Would you have any hesitation in pulling the trigger if the opportunity arose?
