For parents who advocate spanking and who are planning a foreign vacation with their kids, bear in mind that if you are seen 'smacking' your child in the following countries, you will be charged with assault:

Sweden
Finland
Denmark
Germany
Italy
Norway
Austria
Cyprus
Croatia
Latvia
Israel
Iceland

In Scotland it is currently considered to be assault - but a new law is currently being debated which allows for "justifiable assault" (their term). However, even if this bill passes, you would have to remember not only not use an 'implement' but also remember that the head may not be struck (so no clip around the ear!).
For England, Scotland and Wales, 'reasonable' physicial punishment is allowed by parents - but not by child-minders.
