My parents didn't spank me, and I'm glad they didn't. But I don't think it does any long term damage, really. As long as it's the ultimate punishment, and not handed out irresponsibly, I don't think it's a real problem. It all depends on the style of parenting. And is it negative reinforcement? No more than grounding a child.
