Because if the UN intervenes, that must be with a military force, which cannot be lead by others than the US, who would supply most of the military power.
Muslim masses in the middle east would flare up at the defilement of the holy lands of Islam by the Great Satan and the destruction of the Allah-blessed regime of the pious mullahs. No matter that they hated shi'a muslims until yesterday and would like to see Iran crumble any day.
Leftist and anti-americans would flare up because of the new imperialism of the American pigs (I don't meant that, but that's what they would say) and the capitalist multinationals, not to mention the inhumanity of the new war of the rich against the poor and the search for oil, gas and diamonds and gold and whatever you want.
Not to mention that France and China and Russia have ongoing economic relationships with Iran that would be threathened by the collapse of the regime.
And perhaps some other nations have the same interests, I don't know.
That's why UN will never go there, no matter how many they kill, maim, torture and rape. Sad but true.
And the US alone won't move a finger: the consequences would be even greater, see what has happened with Iraq. US wants to influence IRan by simply surrounding it: Turkey and Iraq on the west, the carrier groups south in the Gulf, Afghanistan east and Russia north. If Afghanistan and Iraq are stabilized, and if the Russians can estabilish a firm grip on the Caucasian republics, the surrounding is done.
