- there are supposed to act as a buffer between rebels and government forces - in order to protect civilians.
President Taylor is very unlikely to resign:
1. He's democraticly elected (unusually enough)
2. He has war-crimes charges hanging over his head for his involvement in the civil-war in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
