Culture and economics affect birthrates. In societies like ours where everything is, "learn,learn,learn-work,work,work! If you don't keep up you're a failure!", we have less children simply because we have less time. They can stymie your career and it takes longer and longer to get that career these days! ! In impoverished countries, children are eventually EXTRA income and someone who will hopefully care for you in your old age.
