Because Windows XP is based on NT, you will have some hurdles getting them to talk to each other. Windows NT security is tighter than 98, and you'll probably find that at the default settings you can't see shares on your XP box from the 98 box, but you can go the other way... XP TO 98.

You can get around this by opening up the security on your XP box... which is fine if you're not connecting to the internet.
