I'm off for a weekend to the historic town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire.

Set amidst glorious countryside near to the Welsh Borders, Shrewsbury is one of England's finest historic market towns. The original Saxon settlement of Scrobbesbyrig occupied two small hills within a horseshoe loop of the River Severn and the remaining land approach was heavily fortified, making an excellent defensive site.

Black and white timber mansions dating back to the 1400's line the narrow medieval cobbled streets of the town centre. Magnificent Shrewsbury Castle guards the only land approach and the Abbey church founded by the Normans in 1083 is still a place of worship. It is also the setting to the Brother Cadfael murder mysteries.

I'll be staying in a 12th century hotel and on saturday I'll be popping down to Cardiff in Welsh Wales to watch my team play in the FA Cup Final. If you get a chance to watch it look out for me - I'll be the one in the red!!!
