I think the idea of someone owning a gun is more terrifying than someone actually pointing one at you. I once read an interesting story about a burglar trying to break into a man's house and finding all sorts of deterrants set up ("Beware of dog" signs, security system signs, and even a note on the door to a "friend" that the owner would be back in a few minutes). Of course, the owner has neither the dog, nor the system, nor the friend, but he was successful in deterring the burglar.

So, I think the best idea would be for everyone to put signs up, ranging from "Be back in a few minutes" to "The owners are armed". This is a lot less dangerous, and probably a lot more successful - I know I wouldn't want to risk getting shot just for breaking into a house.
