LOL Saz!
Leave it to the military!
I wonder how many millions they have spent developing "forever food".

Have you noticed that bread does not grow mold as quickly as it did when we were kids? With the exception of Iron Kids Bread, most of them will last two weeks or longer. Ick, yuck and eeeew!

(That was one good thing that came out of having my stomach ruptured...I cannot tolerate chemically processed foods and that includes massive doses of preservatives...if it makes me feel the least bit ill when it's fresh I don't ever eat it again. Of course, I'll be one of the first people to starve to death when real food is no longer available. )

Lady Z,
In order to insure the freshness and goodness of the beans in your chili, make it without them and add your beans to the chili during the last 5 minutes of simmering time to heat them through or to the bulk of what you've frozen as it thaws/heats. This would be canned kidney beans lol...I don't know anything about cooking kidney beans or pinto beans or any other type of "soup" beans since I don't eat them...my chili is made in two pots...one for the bean eaters with canned beans and one for me with none.
The above info about the beans in your chili comes from Betty Crocker...I figure she should know!
