One proficiency is all you need. Sigh... people seem to think one proficiency is sucky, but that is the same as Clerics and you do not hear them complain about the Clerics' lack of melee abilities, because there is no lack. Remember, an Archer is a Ranger kit, so your THACO will be pretty impressive as you plod along. Not to mention bonuses from high STR.

Anyway, you will rarely need to melee, as the primary tactic of a solo Archer is to run and snipe from a distance. Due to this, you should get the Boots of Speed as soon as possible. Mine got his at level 12... with the aid of several potions and minor spells( Bhaalspawn powers and Ranger spells).

Once you hit a certain level, your THACO will be so ridiculously low that you can spit at a melee foe's face and blast him at point blank range, even with the -8 THACO penalty for using ranged weapons at close range.
