i understand your predicament. especially once you've played BG II and Throne, it's hard to look at BG I the same way again. i'm currently playing through with this dude Santhis, a fighter. i plan to play him through BG II and ToB as well...i've installed the xp cap remover, so i won't be limited in the game by him suddenly reaching the cap...
still, no matter what level fighter he reaches in BG I, at the beginning of BG II i'm going to duel him as a 9th or 13th level fighter, dualed to a cleric of lathander...i'm going to switch up his proficiencies accordingly, assuming that since the close of BG I a few years have passed and he has altered his disciplines as to reflect his newfound clericdom. sure, some people may consider this cheating, but it makes sense to me and it ensures that i enjoy the game all the more.
you could try the 'natural badass' approach....go ahead and MAKE a bard or a cleric (someone who would be in the back quite a bit usually), but boost him up in levels from the very beginning...don't do the same for the NPCs, but you can assume that the Bhaal essence has made your character a little more powerful than the average adventurer. this way, you'll be able to unlock the later power of such classes a little earlier. if you feel this will unbalance the game, just take two or three or even four NPCs, as opposed to the full five.
