Thanks 250 and Mel!
I just feel that sometimes we don't KNOW how to react or to protect ourselves and this is one area I remembered seeing on a video they showed in college ages ago. Never get on an elevator with someone if you get even the smallest feeling of discomfort, stay NEAR the control panel(ie: don't let the stranger be the one with the ability to block access to the alarm or call buttons) and look them in the eye so they know you are paying attention and can possibly identify them later. One thing we were told by a campus safety officer was that most attackers want a submissive/frightened target so they look for someone not paying much attention, looking at the ground or reading/doing something else while walking. Basically unaware of their surroundings and oblivious to the attacker. They don't want the one who can id them, fights back and makes a lot of noise.
I have a very healthy set of lungs.. LOL.. and believe me, I'd have used them. I figure there's always a possiblity the person is NOT a weirdo/pervert/mugger.. BUT I'd rather have that wee bit of embarrassment than the alternative!
