At first I thought he was rubbish but now I'm finding out that's not the case. He can be a very good melee fighter if you use the correct spells. Before he joins a fight have him cast tenser transformation(level 6 mage)this will give him the thaco of a fighter. Next have him cast stoneskin on himself. Now attack the enemy he will be unstopable because of the stoneskin and with tensers transformation he will have a good thaco so will deal out alot of damage. The only downside is his low hps because of his low constitution but you can give him the girdle of constitution to combat this.

One problem: Tensers Transformation disables mage spells. Thus, you can`t cast Tensers then Stoneskin, unless you wait for the Tensers to wear off. You have to do it the other way around
