To get the apprentices, your main character must be a Mage or Sorcerer. When you then have done the Planar Sphere-quest, Lavok will give you the Sphere, as your stronghold.
When you have gotten it, a Cowled Wizard appears, named Teos, IIRC, and will give you your apprentices.
These can make the Ring of Wizardry for you, but the apprentices Nala and Larz will die under the making-process.

If memory serves me (which it rarely does) if you're lucky only Larz dies.
