You need the Players Handbook (PHB), if there are other people around that game and one of them has experience being Dungeon Master (DM/GM... Game Master, as it's called in many other RPG genre's) you don't need the Dungeon Master Guide, and it's actually recommended that you don't read it, it's secrets are for Dungeon Masters only, same goes for the Monster Manuals. you also need Dice, but this is a given, you need at least one complete set [1 4 sided die "d4", one 6 sided die "d6", a "d8" 2 d10's, a d12, and a d20, there are others you can get (d30 and d100) but these are rare and usually reserved for powergamers and the hopelessly addicted such as myself...]
you can never have too many dice, i have around 12 sets here and another 10 at home i've been trying to get back.
it can be useful to get the books to help you out with setting up a character, especially for someone new to the game (i've been playing for close to 7 years and spent easily over $5,000 on books, supplements and stuff that looked interesting to me.
hope this helps
