Well, Dutkanator, all I can offer you is my prayers and (((HUGS))).
That and the echo of others here, children all grow and learn at different rates. I suggest you take that book with the charts and graphs and SMACK that doctor with it!

It'll make you feel better.

Seriously, they thought something was wrong with my cousin at first, only to find out that he didn't speak intelligibly until he was five out of an attack of the lazies! Seems the lady who kept him during the day let him get away with pointing at something and grunting and she would get it for him instead of making him ask for it. Once we found that out, we just refused to respond to him if he didn't use real words. Amazing how fast he 'learned' to talk, then.

Not that your situation is the same, just showing that there may be many OTHER reasons your son is where he is right now. I was a Pre-K teacher and saw a broad range of ability levels in the children I taught. None less able to learn and grow than the next, just on different levels of development. Your son should be fine and is probably just in a slow period, then he'll spurt up again and you'll wonder why you ever worried.
Another example of growth spurts: When I was in 11th grade, many of the 9th grade boys were MUCH shorter than I was (and I'm only 5'4" now). In ONE year, they grew to 5'10" to 6'2". It was amazing!
Keep your spirits up, hon, and know that our hearts go out to you. *hugs*
