Baldur's Gate 2 and Baldur's Gate are COOL. They do not suck. There are many quests, plot turns, places to explore, sub-quests, cool items, races, professions and kits, etc. Just because there is no 'world' doesn't mean it is bad. I think they were just making up for BG1 in the BG2 map, in BG1 there were probably 50 places to go, and the Baldur's gate 2 dudes wanted it not to be so confusing, so combined many different places into about 15.

Edit: there are 3196 different characters in BG2. To make a horribly confusing plot for each one of them to add "Personal Life" would take years and a LOT of money, so that would not really be an option, eh?
