If it works on gamespy, then why don't you play on gamespy?
look here what we do:
you host a game on gamespy. have everyone join your game
then, everyone quites, turns off gamespy, then rejoins your game by TCP/IP (since your IP number is already saved on their computers)
this way, it is still a Lan game, so it is fast enough
