Yeah you may need to all get that DirectX patch, and maybe try Yahoo Messenger, has a "voice conference" feature that allows more than two people to talk, works in my BG1, TOTSC, DSOTSC multi game just fine, you just gotta all take turns talking, as if two talk at the same time, you will only hear one. Give it a try!
