Havoc

20th century:

In a normal, filthy, city street
A pigeon, traffic-dodging,
Pecks at a bag of oil-grimed chips
Spilling, gutter-lodging…

Pristine Alaska’s sickened sea
Vomits a viscous weight –
A burden of oily dead and dying:
An obscene human freight…

Rare sea otters, fur oil-spiked;
Razor-bills flapping, crying:
All fighting, panic surging
‘Midst spoiling riches dying…

Rolling clouds of smoke red-lit:
Funeral pyres of forests flamed for greed,
Blot out the sun and rise high up
To join the ozone-eating cfc’s…

Let’s watch the ‘Northern’ lands wax fat
On famine and war in the ‘south’ –
As factory filth kills our rivers
And government ‘greens’ with its mouth…

Amoral men with munitions for sale
Abetted by government favour,
Sell weapons and tanks to killers who prey
In the name of some bloody ‘saviour’…

The Powers shout “Peace and Prosperity!”
‘Midst hatred and death of all reason:
But children are crying in vain
In the tatters of ‘civilisation’.

21st century

Nothing changes.

Powerful poem, Ms. Fljotsdale.
