Kivan, absolutely. I kept him with my party all the way through BG2 and TotSC.
I liked Coran a lot, and wish they had kept him in the game. BG2 sadly lacks pure elves as NPCs, and both Kivan and Coran were elves. So was Xan.
As far as good-aligned magic users go, there's Nalia, who's a straight mage rather than a specialist so she can cast from all schools. One thing that bugged me about Dynaheir was that she was blocked from TWO schools of casting because she was an Invoker. I know Nalia is dualled from a thief, but it was done at such a low level (4th level) that it doesn't really matter. I never use Nalia as a Thief, and really only utilize her as a mage with a special talent of being able to use a short bow and a longsword.

But she's easily the 2nd best NPC magic user in the game (next to Edwin), and available very quickly into Chapter 2. I tend to use Nalia as my front-line power mage, and Aerie as a good backup, especially for the lower-level spells.
Others I wish they had kept in, hmmm...
for sheer humor, Tiax
Yeslick (great LG fighter-cleric, and there's a dearth of good-aligned dwarves in BG2). I'd have much rather had Yeslick than Anomen.
Branwen (great pure cleric, and I personally think Tempus rocks as the Lord of Battles!) Plus I liked her Austrian-Hungarian accent.
