I habitually read the local paper on almost every day, including the letters to the editor.

I must say I have been pleasantly surprised by many of the letters to the editor I have seen these past few days. I live in a rather politically conservative area of the US, down here in the Bible Belt. I fully expected the letters to be predominantly of the hawkish type, ranting and raving about the evil arabs and how we should smite them with our version of the Wrath of God.

I have been astonished at the wisdom of my countrymen, however, as represented by their letters to the local paper here, pleasantly surprised by the number of people out there who grasp that the issues involved here are larger than one terrorist incident, and that the US government has brought this action upon its own people at least in part by its past conduct, and who wish to find a better way out of this mess than the same old tired cycle of death and destruction.

I hope this is a sign that we are indeed rising to the occasion.
