I used to play a hell of a lot on my University LAN last year. I got pretty good at it, mostly because I often found myself still going a 4 in the morning.
As it was a LAN you wouldn't expect it to lag, but sometimes it did quite badly. I believe this was due to the server not being able to handle the maps (especially the newer large ones) with the amount of people playing on them especially if someone was using their computer as the server and playing on it. So if you are getting lag try a different server it may solve the problem. Be careful though, I've spent more time playing CS than BG, BG2 and TOB put together.
