Here is a GREAT rule: I am not in this world to make people happy and conversly people aren't in this world to make me happy. Let me apply this in a personal way. My wife adds happiness to my life but she isn't responsible to make me happy. I can add happiness to my wife's life, but I am not responsible to make her happy. In other words, in order to have a healthy relationship with another I must have a good sense of self-worth. I must be healthy to have healthy relationships. When anyone lives by the understanding that the "other" in my life will complete me, well then that person is in BIG trouble because then the locus of control is outside oneself resulting in an enslavement to others. When we put our happiness in the hands of others we give these others tremendous power over us. When we demand people make us feel special it means the focus is really very self-centered. Truly the very best relationships are friendships. That alone should have been enough for your girl.
