Basically, a treant is an ent ripoff. Just as a halfling is a hobbit ripoff. That's why they have the ability to cause structural damage.
In the Ad&d Player's Handbook a high-level ranger can sometimes be so lucky as to have a treant as a companion. As you can guess this rare honour is very appreciated.
