It all depends. If I'm planning to use Imoen as my main mage, I'll do the bare minimum of quests in Chapter 2 and then move on to Chapters 3, 4, and 5. All of the Chapter 2 quests can be done in Chapter 6 as well.

If I'm a mage, or I've got Nalia or Edwin and I just want Imoen as backup, I tend to do more of the quests.

What I would recommend as bare minimum would be:

1. Your Stronghold (whatever character you are)
2. The Circus (if you want to pick up Aerie)
3. Copper Coronet & Slavers (if you want to pick up Anomen and/or Nalia, also gets you Lilacor the +3 sword)
4. The Harper's Guild/finding Montaron (fairly easy early-on, and really sets off the Jaheira romance if you're doing that one)
5. De'Arnise (especially if you're fighter-class; it's one of the easiest and first strongholds to get, and to get the Flail of Ages)
6. Mae'Var's guild (if you want to pick up Edwin, and if you aren't a thief, but want the +3 Sword of backstabbing
7. Trademeet (optional unless you're a Druid and going for the stronghold, but extremely easy quests here, and loads of great equipment, also if you want to pick up Cernd).

Any others you wish to do will be based on your character, how much money you have, and how much you want completed by Chapter 2. I'd recommend trying to finish your romance quests and other NPC quests as well, except for Jaheria, who's quests go on, and on, and on, and on...

Here's my example. My last character I played was a male human Berserker dualled to Thief (Chaotic Good). After the starter dungeon, I picked up Aerie in the Circus Quest, Anomen and Nalia in the Copper Coronet, dropped Jaheira (don't really use her), and then completed Copper Coronet and Slavers Guild. I then found the poisoned guy and completed the Xzar/Montaron/Harpers quest. Went off to De'Arnise, got my stronghold and the Flail of Ages and the Elven Bow for Minsc. Back to Athkatla, then got Aerie and Anomen's quests almost simultaneously (talk to Anomen's dad, talk to Uncle Quayle). Anomen's was the easiest, so did that one first, then started the Haer'Dalis quest. Freed Haer'Dalis but did not return the gem just yet. Went on and did Mae'var's guild since it is so easy and got the +3 short sword of backstabbing (best sword for Nalia to wield in the game). Decided to skip Trademeet for the time being and instead did the Umar Hills quest (Minsc's) to kill the Shadow Dragon and get the Shadow Armor for my fighter/thief (best armor for a thief in the game, IMO). Also picked up Valygar.

Got back to Athkatla, used Valy to pop open the Planar Sphere, then dumped him. However, I didn't do the Planar Sphere, just opened the door. Did the Guarded Compound to get Celestial Fury and let my character dual-wield it with the Blade of Roses which I had purchased from the Copper Coronet. About that same time, Nalia got spirited away by her rakish bf so I did the few quests to get her back. Anomen also had his trial and increased in glory At that time, Sir Ryan Trawl approached us and wanted us to solve the "Fallen Paladins", so since I wanted their help in Chapter 6, I went on and did that (a breeze by this point). I also started the "Unseeing Eye" quest (did not complete yet), and then did the Sir Sarles quest to get the Illithium for the Mace of Disruption.

By this time (4 weeks game time), I had completed all the NPC quests that I was with, had enough equipment for everyone, and had plenty of gold; so much in fact I was able to pay Gaelen Bayle to start Chapter 3, and have plenty left over to buy Nalia the Robe of Vecna and to get Aerie the Sling of Everard +5 (two must-haves, IMO.)

That's when I started Chapter 3. So, the Chap 2 quests I left open were:

Trademeet
Unseeing Eye
Windspear Hills (Firkraag)
Planar Sphere
Planar Prison (Haer'Dalis' follow up)
Twisted Rune
Kangaxx

which were plenty for Imoen to play "catch-up" on and get the experience.

(Also, since I had ToB installed, there was Watcher's Keep as well, but that's another story altogether. )

Cheers,
