Not even any leather. Can't wear mage robes either. Bards can be great, but you have to accept that you are not gonna use this guy as a tank. Get him some bracers and a ring of protection, a buckler if he's gonna use a sling rather than a bow/crossbow, and keep him out of the front line.
Cast magic missile (or other offensive spell) as many times as you can, then weigh in with ranged weapons (make sure you have a proficiency in bows or missiles from the start) or back up your fighters with bardsong, which gives them bonuses to THAC0 and damage. Only draw your sword if you are attacked at close range.
OR cast armour or other protective spell, then weigh in as a melee fighter.
You will have fun with a bard, it just requires a bit more thought than to charge straight in with swords flashing.
