Hmm, sounds weird.
I am not sure, but yes, it might have something to do with ToB. Go back to the save, but this time choose another NPC. If this NPC also gets chunked, then yes, it's probably because of ToB. Download some patches from here, and see if this fixes it.

Now, if you are in Brynnlaw and want to get to Spellhold without having Yoshi or Minsc in your party, there are two ways to get there:
1. You can still make the Pirate Lord believe you're mad, by constantly saying you want to go there, or
2. You can find the Mage who can enter Spellhold. His house is somewhere north-east, IIRC, and there you will attack and kill him. He has a wardstone that'll get you to the Asylum.
