Your assumption is correct that you need to defend the two guys that are to be killed by Sarevok's lackeys.
The way I do it is that I send two of my party members in to defend the two innocents in melee combat. I send my best over to Sarevok, with a healer right behind him. Tht leaves my thief in the corner to shoot arrows or sneak around and backstab whoever she chooses, and my mage is also keeping a distance, altenating attack spells (not eara effect spell, because that will hurt the people I am saving).
