Keep playing!! I've experienced the same thing you have Archaon. The beginning levels and the never ending dialogue can really bogged down players who are use to the dialogue style in BG and its related games. But at the end, it gets addictive as the story unfolds. Probably best $24 bucks I've ever spent (yeah, I got it near X'mas too).
Make sure you talk to your party members frequently, the dialogue choices get updated every now and then.
