What Sir Marcus said is 100% correct!
To elaborate, a stronghold is a "home" for the protagonist (your character) different classes get different strongholds i.e. druids get the druid grove, mages get the planar sphere, thieves get the thieves guild and so on...
Each stronghold offers you different quests and rewards, adds a bit of variety as far as replaying the game is concerned.
