Sorry--this is one more spot in the game that really should have been better thought out. The only items available to you that confer Negative Plane Protection are, as previously stated, the Amulet of Power & The Mace o' Disruption+2 (which you have to fight Vampires to get ANYWAY.) So I'm afraid you might have to compromise your Solo game for a while, because a solo Thief is pretty much screwed here (You can't even side WITH Bodhi, to the disgruntlement of many). You'll have to find some Cleric (or Jaheira) to cast Negative Plane Protection on you every 3 rounds, because it wears off so damn fast. You might try using the ultimate cheese of a Protection From Undead scroll, or you could be a little more fair, by cheating (how's THAT for a paradox?) and using Shadowkeeper to hack the Amulet onto your neck for a while--you're only using 1 of its enchantments anyway.
NPC MOD Idea: Give the Paladin in the Graveyard District (the one who lost his adopted son) a companion, who will join your party only after you do that little mini-quest and ease the Paladin's grief. This new NPC just happens to be an Undead Hunter.
