When I installed the game it put the save directory under My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2 automatically. Most of the latest EA games do that I think. When I reinstalled the game, I saved that folder, then put it back there and all my save games were there.
If you only copy the neighbourhoods, I don't know how much of the saved games will be there, because I don't know how much info is there. But I do know the pictures you took in the game, for example, will be lost since they're under Storytelling. So I suggest you try to find the folder under My Documents. Tell me if it works.
